    A filter for a cigarette includes a porous filter rod circumscribed by a smoke impervious wrapper wherein the filter rod with the non-porous wrapper therearound is provided with at least one groove therein extending a preselected distance longitudinally therealong. The groove is closed at one end and is provided with an opening substantially at the other end in flow communication with the filter rod. Tipping material circumscribes the wrapper and is provided with flow-through openings therein in flow communication with the groove wherein ventilating air is the only fluid flowing through the groove when the filter is used in combination with a cigarette during normal smoke draw.

    This invention relates to cigarette filters having grooves for directing the flow of venting air through a cigarette. The purpose of the invention is to cool the smoke directly in the filter and improve the taste properties of the smoke. The cigarette filter consists of a filtering element 1 enclosed in a smoke-tight casing 2, provided with longitudinal channels 3, the length of which is less than the length of the filtering element. The grooves are located in the middle part of the filter and have a hole 4 located adjacent but to the oral end of the filter. A rim 5 connecting filtering element 1 with a tobacco rod 6 is placed along the sheath. Filter element 1 can be made of cellulose acetate or of another filter material made of fiber or foam material of tobacco smoke. By smoke-tight or non-porous shells are meant the non-porous outer surfaces of the foam material forming a single unit with the filter element, as well as the shells of non-porous material not forming a single unit with the filter element. The filter is made using a standard cellulose acetate cell or similar material by winding a non-porous casing material onto this core and subsequently forming or otherwise treating the filter rod with a casing to form Vani therein grooves 3.     1. FILTER FOR CIGARETTE, including a filtering element of a cylindrical shape, enclosed in smoke grooves.
